New Consent Search Feature

As mentioned briefly last week, we have been working on a new consent search feature that extends the access to consent information.  This new application builds on existing consent search functionality (viewing consent details), by adding two new features:

1. Ability to display the consent spatially.

2. Ability to download associated consent documentation.

It is now live on our website  and you can see it in action when you click on a consent search result.

Feedback welcome!

My Environment …

The USA agency for the enviroment (EPA) has created a one stop mashup for environmental information in your region. This web site provides users the ability to ‘plug in’ a zip code to find out about what environmental data the agency has in the area and then provides detail information on this information. This is in informational areas they have termed ….

  • My Land
  • My Water
  • My Air
  • My Health
  • MyEcological Conditions
  • MyCollaboration

The last one is an area for the community to send feedback or report spills etc …

They have not only just done a 2D version but also there is a 3D version in virtual earth 3D mode. Wow!

It looks like a great concept.

If only we had their resources …. :( .. we could acheive something similar.

We have some of the data available like My Water / My Air …. maybe we should give it a go?

some pictures below …

Jerry has blogged about it more in full here

It’s been a long while …..

Hi,

It’s been a long while since we have added a post  …. sorry about that. :)

We have been getting rather busy here at the council and some projects have had to take all of our time.

There is how ever a new component that we have done to help the public locate / understand where granted resource consents are located visually. The new consent search feature to go live soon …. this will have a nice ajax mashup map attached. Also the ability to download the public consent documents from the site.

Here is a sneak preview …

Keep an eye on your Bus during Xmas

Hi,

I said we would finish it before Xmas … well we are mostly there.

Still a few styling issues, but the functionality is there.

Have a go if you are interested????

The link is here … http://arcgis.ecan.govt.nz/Beta/Metro/wheresmybus.aspx

We will be changing the design and adding to the functionality.

So if it breaks etc, don’t be too surprised.

Original dev design …

Future design …

Your bus is coming soon!@

Hi GIS People!

Still in development as a personal hobby is a mashup with CHCH’s bus routes / bus stops / real ETA bus times to bus stops and the NEW google street view.

Basically the idea is to locate your street either through the ’street finder’ (google geo coder) or zoom / pan around to find your street. Then you can click on the bus icon and Metro’s real time information system will tell you how far away the bus’s for this stop are going to be. You can then add this bus stop to your ‘My Bus Stops’ for the next time you open the web page. The page will then zoom to the bus stop location and display the bus’s ETA to this stop. Also as you zoom / pan around the map, on the left hand side it displays the bus stops that are located on the map as you move. From these links you can also zoom and open the real time information.

But there’s more … With google opening up New Zealand with street view you can now also view the street that the bus stop is located on to check see if you have the right location. Very cool, well done google.

Whaddyathink?

We should have it going for a Xmas delivery. Stay tuned.

Want some GIS data but don’t know where to go?

There is an interesting web site that has taken shape in New Zealand. It’s called Koordinates.com. It’s a young start up company that is trying to achieve a one stop shop for New Zealand GeoData.

They have been going since April 2008 this year.

Already they have 107 layers on their system (if I’ve counted that right :( ).

On the site you can set an area of interest and ask the web page to send you the data in x format (a few to choose from!) via a download.

They currently use google maps for the back drop.

So maybe drop over and see what they are doing. Here is the link again. http://koordinates.com

Swimming Water Quality Mashup is Here

Water Quality Mashup

It’s been a long wait but we have finally completed our first mashup! This involved taking our swimming water quality GIS layer and integrating it with Google maps to create an application that allows users to view the water quality  for tested swimming locations around Canterbury.  From the GIS layer we are able to read the grades and using the Google maps info window functionality give grading overviews, display the grading graphs, and eventually display location photos.

Swimming Water Quality

We asked on our blog for some feedback (via the comment system) on potential projects that may be of interest.

Although this is a test area we hope the work and experiences done here will lead to a better service available for the community of ECan’s GIS data.

Unfortunately no one has commented and provided suggestions, so we have decided and started on our first Beta ‘mashup’ which will be around swimming water quality.

Please do add your comments/suggestions on the blog so we can discuss what you would envisage could be other beta mashups / applications.

A sneak peek @ new web tools

The team is getting ready to unleash a new Beta version of our GIS tools onto our servers.

This is a picture of the new web tools.

The new tools are very easy to use and you only need a web browser (a modern one though!).

Some of the exciting new options that are available to us are ..

Click here for an excellent example on the web for the city of Boston.

We are busy testing a few ideas out. Please add your ideas as comments as we need to decide what our first Beta tool project is going to be. Make a comment below with your ideas and suggestions so others can see your great ideas. In this way we can communicate with the whole group!
